Recovery After Lip Cancer Treatment

Information on the first days and weeks after lip cancer treatment, eating, scar care, sun protection and long-term follow-up.

Recovery after lip cancer treatment involves much more than the closing of the wound: eating and speech settling back into a routine, the return of sensation and movement in the lip, the maturing of scars and long-term follow-up with regular check-ups. This page describes what awaits you in the days, weeks and months after surgery.

The first days

In the first days after the operation, swelling, tightness and bruising of the lip are to be expected. What to pay attention to during this period:

  • The wound line is kept clean and moist as advised by your doctor; it is important not to pick off the crusts.
  • A soft brush and the recommended mouthwash are used for oral hygiene.
  • Eating continues with liquid and soft foods in small sips and small bites; using a straw is generally not recommended because it can strain the lip.
  • Smoking and alcohol delay wound healing, so they must be avoided completely during this period.
  • Speaking is kept to a minimum in the first days so that the lip can rest.

The first weeks

The stitches are removed within a few weeks, and the swelling largely subsides. Eating gradually returns to a normal consistency; if the mouth opening feels narrow, the stretching exercises recommended by your doctor are helpful. Numbness of the lip may persist; this usually decreases over months as the nerve endings regrow. If the repair was done with a flap from the opposite lip, the small procedure planned to separate the flap takes place during this period.

Patients receiving radiotherapy

If radiotherapy is given after surgery, redness, tenderness, dry mouth and changes in taste may occur on the lip and inside the mouth. These effects usually lessen in the weeks after the end of treatment. During this period soft, non-spicy and lukewarm foods should be preferred, plenty of fluids taken and oral care continued attentively.

Scar care and sun protection

Scars may be red and firm in the first months; over time they soften and fade. Once the scar has matured, gentle massage may be done with your doctor’s approval. The lip and the scar area are very sensitive to the sun; wearing a wide-brimmed hat and using a protective lip balm outdoors is important both for the appearance of the scar and for reducing the risk of a new cancer developing.

Long-term follow-up

Regular check-ups are planned after treatment. At these visits the lip, the inside of the mouth and the neck are examined, and ultrasound or other imaging methods are requested where needed. Check-ups are more frequent in the first years and less frequent in later years. Giving up tobacco completely and protecting yourself from the sun are the most effective steps for reducing the likelihood of a new tumour developing.

When should you see a doctor?

Situations that call for a visit without waiting for the next check-up:

  • Increasing redness, discharge or opening of the wound line
  • Bleeding that does not stop, or sudden swelling
  • A new sore, crusting or firmness on the lip or inside the mouth
  • A newly noticed swelling in the neck
  • Steadily increasing difficulty in swallowing or opening the mouth.

Frequently asked questions

When can I return to normal food after surgery?

Liquid and soft foods are recommended in the first days; as the wound heals, usually within a few weeks, you gradually return to a normal diet.

Is numbness of the lip permanent?

Numbness after surgery is common and usually decreases over months as the nerve endings regrow; a small area of permanently reduced sensation may remain.

How long do the check-ups continue?

Regular check-ups continue for years; they are more frequent in the first years and less frequent later, and at each visit the lip, the mouth and the neck are examined.
